István Szajkó was born in 1955 in Csonoplya, South. In 1973 he graduated from the arts department of the high school of industrial art in Novi Sad, and in 1978 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. During and after his studies, he visited several European art centres, including Venice, Paris, Madrid, Munich and Kassel.
Between 1980 and 1982 he worked as a professional member of the Szabadkai Fine Arts Meeting and then worked as a freelance artist. For many years he lived and created a double Hungarian connection: Szabadka and Lokút, where he maintained a studio.
The art of Szayko is determined by the experience of nature, the landscape and its narrative elements. Often painted bicycles, which are among the most well-known motives, have been mentioned by many as the painter of the bicycle. These objects are not only scenes on the screen, but also memoirs: their symbolic presence gives the compositions a strong emotional and associative layer.
In his works, he often used pastel technology, in which he used the colours with special subtlety, with the shades of greens, blues and yellows, but also worked with oil and water paint, and even experimented with various materials. In his compositions, calmness and tense naturality are mixed with the inner, deeper emotional world.
During his decades of career, István Szaykó participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions throughout Europe, especially in Yugoslavia, as well as in Germany and France. In 2025, in the Dubniczay Palace in Veszprém, he presented more than forty works from the early studies to the most recent works.
Criticals and art lovers often highlight the inner lyricity and the powerful emotional impact of the monuments of Sajko's works. In his paintings, the objects are the bearers of a bicycle, a tree or a landscape, not merely represented elements, but internal narratives.
István Szajkó died on April 1, 2025 at the age of 70. After his death, memorial exhibitions were held at several locations: after the Szeged City Museum, we will remember him through his works in the South Country House in Szeged.
At the opening of the exhibition, István Szajkó's work will be remembered by Andrea Szajkó-Illés, while the artist Sagmeister Laura commends it.
The atmosphere of the evening is complete by musical contribution, and traditional toast is not missed.
The exhibition can be visited for one month, 9 and 17 free of charge.
